Popular Nigerian comedian, Seyi Law, has stirred mixed reactions on social media after mocking a viral video of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, serving food at a public event in Imo State.
The video, which has since gone viral, captures the former Anambra State governor walking around the venue with trays of food.
He is seen smiling, interacting with guests, and personally serving them meals. The moment, described by many as humble and relatable, has sparked widespread debate online.
Seyi Law reacts with sarcasm
Reacting to the clip, Seyi Law reposted the footage on his X (formerly Twitter) page. However, instead of praising the gesture, he took a sarcastic tone, suggesting that Obi’s actions were staged for attention rather than sincere.
“This is the height of humility. Na today I confirm sey Peter Obi really humble,” Seyi Law wrote, using a mix of English and Pidgin.
His comment quickly drew backlash from Obi’s supporters and other social media users, many of whom felt the joke was unnecessary and unfair.
Supporters fire back
Obi’s loyalists didn’t take the comment lightly. Within minutes, the comedian’s post was flooded with responses defending the former governor’s character and leadership style.
A user with the handle @Jossynario wrote:
“This is in a region where he got over 95% of the votes. He doesn’t need to work hard to impress anyone here.”
Another user, @Nellycentz, made a religious reference:
“Imagine what this idiot will say when Jesus was washing the feet of his disciples. Or when the Pope does the same to his followers.”
A third commenter, @Agu_iyi, compared Obi’s action with those of world leaders:
“I remember when Sanwo-Olu went to church to greet and engage people before his re-election, and nobody said a word. Look at pictures of UK prime ministers and US presidents serving food. Why is it a problem now that Peter Obi did the same?”
Peter Obi has often been described as a humble leader with a reputation for modesty and simplicity. Throughout his campaign and public appearances, he has been seen flying economy class, carrying his own luggage, and mingling freely with the public.
For many of his supporters, the viral video is just another example of his down-to-earth nature. They argue that the former governor has never stopped engaging directly with citizens, even after the elections.
Seyi Law’s comment may also be seen through a political lens. The comedian had previously expressed support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current president and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 election. His political stance has often put him at odds with supporters of the Labour Party and other opposition groups.
This latest jab at Peter Obi has only deepened that divide, reigniting debates about political loyalty, sincerity, and how public figures choose to express their opinions.
Obi remains silent
As of the time of this report, Peter Obi has not responded to Seyi Law’s post. The former governor is known for staying above social media controversies, often choosing silence or diplomacy over direct engagement.
