Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has opened up about his early struggles to gain his father’s support for his entertainment career.
During a candid interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father strongly opposed his dream of becoming a comedian.
According to him, his dad wanted him to pursue law and was disappointed when he failed to secure admission to study the course.

He explained that after several attempts, he eventually settled for a degree in Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. It was while on campus that he discovered his passion for comedy and began creating skits.
Sabinus recalled that his early comedy journey brought little to no income, prompting him to hide his skit-making activities from his father throughout his university years.
The truth only came out a year after graduation when his father began seeing his name and face on posters for comedy shows.
“He was very furious,” he said. “He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”
According to him, his father even expressed regret for spending money on his education after realising he had chosen comedy over law.
However, the comedian added that the narrative changed once his career began to flourish. When he started earning from comedy and gifting his father money, the once-hostile parent eventually gave him his blessings.
Today, Sabinus is one of Nigeria’s most successful and influential skit makers, known for his energetic performances and relatable humour. This journey began with doubts but evolved into a source of family pride.
