Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has sparked conversation on social media after strongly criticising women who willingly choose to become second wives.
In a video shared on her Instagram page, the actress echoed the sentiments of a cleric who recently condemned polygamous unions, describing them as ungodly and destructive to families.
Edochie argued that women who enter such relationships are often motivated by greed rather than genuine love or destiny. She insisted that choosing to be a second wife is not a position of honour but a decision that causes heartbreak and division in families.
In her post, the outspoken actress used strong language to express her disapproval of women who marry men who are already taken.
“If you’re a second wife, you are nothing but a witch. You are not innocent, you are not special, you are just greedy,” she wrote.

“You have chosen to feed on another woman’s tears, to build your happiness on someone else’s pain. Do not call it love; it is wickedness. Do not call it destiny; it is covetousness. You stole what was not yours, and you expect to be celebrated? Never. A second wife is not a queen. She is a usurper. You are the thief who slipped into another woman’s home pretending to be a bride.”
Her comments immediately attracted attention online, with some praising her for boldly speaking out against what they see as a growing trend of women choosing to marry already married men.
Edochie’s remarks reflect her long-standing advocacy for strong family values and the sanctity of marriage. She argued that when women willingly accept to become co-wives, they contribute to the breakdown of homes, leaving children emotionally scarred and first wives devastated.
The Nollywood star urged women to resist the temptation of relationships that come at the expense of another woman’s happiness, saying it is not a destiny to be claimed but a moral choice that has far-reaching consequences.
Nevertheless, Edochie’s strong words have reignited debate around polygamy, morality, and women’s roles in sustaining family structures.
Known for her passionate and often controversial takes on social issues, Rita Edochie continues to use her platform to speak on matters of faith, justice, and the protection of family values.
Her latest post is a reminder of the ongoing clash between traditional cultural practices, religious teachings, and evolving views on marriage and relationships in today’s society.
