Afrobeats star Rema has spoken about Nigeria’s struggles, revealing that many citizens have lost hope but emphasizing his commitment to staying optimistic.
Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic and committed to making a difference.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Rema expressed his concerns about the frustration many Nigerians feel. He noted that people are angry and discouraged, but he refuses to let negativity define his outlook. “A lot of people are giving up in Nigeria. A lot of people are angry at Nigeria. But I keep hope,” he said.
The singer also spoke about his role as an artist. He believes carrying Afrobeats and Nigerian culture is a responsibility, not just a career. While some may see him as overly passionate, he remains focused on his mission. “There’s not a lot of people who would carry Afrobeats like this so much, carry culture,” he explained. “It makes me look like a blabber. It makes me look like I talk too much or care too much. Or like I’m trying to be a f**ing messiah. I don’t want to do much. I just want to do what I need to do.”
Rema on his Grammy loss
He also shared his experience at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where he was nominated for Best Global Music Album but did not win. Instead of dwelling on the loss, he accepted the outcome with grace.
He described his emotions during the event. While watching other artists take the stage, he hoped for his moment as well. “I was celebrating people walking up that stage. I had my fingers crossed that I’d walk up the stage too,” he said. “And when it didn’t happen … it happens. It’s not the first award that I got nominated for and didn’t get.”
Rather than seeing it as a setback, Rema views the loss as part of his journey. He has faced similar moments before, and they have never stopped him. His focus remains on his music and future opportunities.

A voice for change
Rema’s words reflect the struggles of many Nigerians. Economic instability, political challenges, and limited opportunities have left many feeling hopeless. Young people, in particular, are searching for better prospects abroad, believing their future lies outside the country.
Despite this, he chooses to stay hopeful. He believes in Nigeria’s potential and wants to use his influence to inspire change. His music carries messages of resilience and cultural pride, reminding Nigerians that their voices matter.
As one of Afrobeats’ biggest stars, Rema understands his influence extends beyond entertainment. He is not just making hits—he is making a statement. Through his words and actions, he hopes to encourage Nigerians to hold onto hope, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
