Veteran Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, widely known by his stage name M.I Abaga, has admitted that supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 general elections was a mistake.
The acclaimed lyricist, often referred to as “Mr. Incredible” or “African Rapper Number One,” opened up about his past political stance during a recent episode of the Menism Podcast.
He said he threw his weight behind the APC at the time because he believed the then-ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was deeply corrupt.
Why I supported APC in 2015 – MI
Explaining his decision, the 43-year-old said he genuinely believed a change in leadership would move the country in a better direction. Like many other Nigerians, he hoped a different political party would offer transparency, development, and a new direction.
“Yes, I supported APC because at that time, I felt that the PDP government was very corrupt,” he said during the interview. “I was one of those who raised their voices and said, ‘Let us unite and bring in democracy.’”
The rapper emphasised that his support was based on a desire to see good governance. He stressed that, at the time, the promise of the APC seemed like a hopeful alternative to the status quo.
Disappointed in APC’s performance
However, the rapper admitted that the APC has failed to live up to its promises and his expectations.
“Unfortunately, this isn’t the APC of my dreams,” he confessed. “As human beings, no matter how much you try to be right, you will be wrong sometimes.”
He made this remark while responding to criticism from social media users. According to the rapper, some of his followers reminded him of his political support when he posted a tweet condemning the deadly herdsmen attacks in Benue State. They pointed out that he had backed the same party under whose leadership these issues escalated.
M.I. explained that his views have evolved, shaped by real-world events and the realities of Nigeria’s political landscape. He said he is no longer driven by blind loyalty to any political group. Instead, he is focused on finding real solutions.
A shift towards youth empowerment
Today, M.I. says his mission has shifted. He is more concerned with using his voice, music, and platform to inspire and work with young Nigerians.
He believes the youth hold the key to Nigeria’s future and that real change can only come through collective effort.
“I am now more focused on collaborating with other young people to build a better nation,” he said.
This marks a turning point for the rapper, who has often been outspoken about national issues. Over the years, M.I. has used his lyrics and influence to address matters such as corruption, poor leadership, insecurity, and social justice.
Fans react to his honest reflection
M.I.’s statement has stirred discussions on social media, with many praising him for owning up to his past decisions. Some fans noted that it takes humility and courage to admit political misjudgment, especially in a country where public figures often shy away from accountability.
Others have commended his willingness to evolve and shift focus toward solutions that can help Nigeria move forward.
A call for responsible citizenship
While M.I. may no longer be aligned with any political party, his words carry a powerful message about civic responsibility. His experience serves as a reminder to many Nigerians to stay informed, question political narratives, and hold leaders accountable.
As the country prepares for future elections, voices like M.I.’s may inspire more young people to engage meaningfully in the democratic process, not just with votes, but with advocacy, action, and creativity.
