The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the Senior Pastor and founder of House on the Rock Church, is currently under investigation after a video of him holding what appeared to be a gun went viral on social media.
The short clip, which began circulating on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram over the weekend, sparked heated conversations online, with many Nigerians expressing concern about the perceived glorification of firearms in a church setting.
In an official statement posted on its verified X account, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that Adefarasin had voluntarily presented himself at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja to cooperate with law enforcement officers.
“The Lagos State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the matter to determine whether any laws were broken,” the statement read. “Pastor Paul Adefarasin honored an invitation to the Command Headquarters and is cooperating fully with investigators.”
While the police did not clarify whether the object seen in the viral video was a real firearm or a replica, they assured members of the public that a thorough review is ongoing. Updates will be shared as the case develops.
The video has divided opinion among Nigerians. Some social media users criticised the display, arguing that it could send the wrong message to worshippers and young viewers. Others defended Adefarasin, suggesting the object might have been a prop used for illustration during a sermon.

Security experts have noted that the circulation of such content online, particularly in a country grappling with rising gun violence and insecurity, can fuel tension and spark unnecessary panic if not clarified.
As of press time, Pastor Adefarasin has not released an official statement addressing the viral clip or the police investigation. The prominent preacher is known for his charismatic preaching style and for organising The Experience, one of the largest gospel music concerts in the world, held annually in Lagos.
Observers say his eventual response could play a key role in shaping public perception of the incident.
Under Nigeria’s Firearms Act, it is illegal for civilians to possess firearms without a license. Legal practitioners say that if the object is proven to be a real gun, investigators would likely seek to confirm whether Adefarasin is a licensed firearm owner and whether displaying the weapon in public violated any provisions of the law.
Human rights advocates have also urged the police to handle the investigation transparently, noting that public trust depends on accountability and even-handed enforcement of the law.
In its statement, the police called for calm and urged Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified claims while the investigation is ongoing.
“The public is advised to remain patient as the Command conducts a comprehensive inquiry into the matter. Updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses,” the Force stated.
With the case still unfolding, all eyes are on both the police and Pastor Adefarasin, as Nigerians await clarity on whether the viral video showed a real weapon and what the legal implications might be.
