Nigerian singer BNXN, formerly known as Buju, says the next step in his personal branding journey is to look “sexier.”
The Afrobeats star made this statement on Wednesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. In the post, he wrote:
“All that’s left for me to do is to get sexier.”
BNXN’s comment comes amid ongoing conversations about body image in the music industry. Over the years, the artist has faced frequent body-shaming online, with some social media users targeting his physical appearance rather than his musical talent.
Now, the ‘Finesse’ hitmaker says he’s choosing to focus on self-improvement and is no longer letting negative comments define his identity. His tweet appears to be a lighthearted but confident declaration that he is taking charge of his public image on his terms.
BNXN has never shied away from addressing the issue of body-shaming. In previous interviews, he admitted that the online trolling did affect him at certain points in his career. However, his latest message suggests a shift in mindset, from reacting to criticism to embracing self-love.
His fans were quick to support the tweet, with many praising him for his resilience and positive attitude. Some users even encouraged him to do whatever makes him feel good, while others praised him for not allowing online negativity to break his spirit.
BNXN’s message also brings to mind a past feud with fellow Nigerian singer Ruger, which at one point involved personal insults and online drama.
Back in 2022, the two artists were locked in a heated exchange on social media that quickly turned ugly. One of the most talked-about moments from that clash was when Ruger body-shamed BNXN. At the time, many fans and observers criticised Ruger’s remarks, calling them unnecessary and harmful.
But last year, Ruger publicly expressed regret over his actions. During an interview, the ‘Asiwaju’ singer admitted that he felt ashamed of his behaviour during the feud.
“I feel bad that I body-shamed BNXN. I regret it,” he said.
His apology was widely accepted by the public, and it marked a turning point in their relationship.
In a surprising twist, the former rivals went on to collaborate on a joint music project titled ‘R&B’, which was released months after their reconciliation. The project showcased a new level of maturity from both artists and was well-received by fans and critics alike.
The title ‘R&B’ was a clever play on their initials Ruger and BNXN, but it also hinted at a softer, more introspective musical direction. The collaboration symbolised not just a professional partnership, but also personal growth.
BNXN’s latest comment about becoming “sexier” may sound playful, but it touches on broader issues faced by many artists today, especially in the digital age. From fashion to fitness, artists are increasingly expected to present a polished image that aligns with their music brand.
However, for BNXN, the message seems to be less about conforming and more about evolving on his terms. With consistent hits, a growing fanbase, and a now-public commitment to self-care, the singer appears to be charting his path with confidence and humour.
In an industry where appearance is often scrutinised just as much as talent, BNXN’s approach sends a strong message: confidence is the ultimate comeback.
