Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has revealed that she has never dated a man more financially stable than herself, admitting that she has “dated down” multiple times but is determined never to repeat the experience.
Speaking on a recent podcast, the 36-year-old actress was candid about her relationship history and the lessons she has learned along the way.
“I’ve never dated someone who has more money than I do,” Nkechi said. “I’ve dated down three times, and I’m not doing that anymore. It is not about being materialistic, but I’ve learned to put my financial well-being first. If I have to do everything for a man, then it becomes a burden, not a partnership.”
The actress explained that while she is not driven solely by money, her past experiences have taught her the importance of dating someone who can meet her halfway financially.
“People think when you say you don’t want to date down, it means you’re looking for someone to bankroll your lifestyle,” she said. “That’s not the case. I’m a hardworking woman, but I want a relationship where there is balance, where the man can also bring something to the table.”
Her remarks have sparked conversations online, with many weighing in on the topic of financial compatibility in relationships. Some fans applauded her honesty, saying her stance reflects the reality that money issues are among the leading causes of relationship breakdowns.

Nkechi’s comments come after her widely discussed split from her younger boyfriend, Xxssive, whom she began dating in 2021. The pair’s romance was highly publicised, often making headlines as they shared intimate moments and playful videos on social media.
However, earlier this year, observant fans noticed that the couple had unfollowed each other on Instagram, sparking speculation about a breakup. Nkechi later confirmed the split, explaining that there was no animosity between them and that the decision to part ways was mutual.
“We are good. There is no fight,” she clarified at the time. “Sometimes things just run their course, and that’s okay. I’m enjoying my single life and focusing on myself.”
Nkechi has often faced criticism over her preference for dating younger men, with some social media users accusing her of seeking publicity through her relationships. However, she has consistently maintained that she is unbothered by public opinion and prefers to live life on her own terms.
“I don’t care what people say. I’ve learned to choose my happiness over society’s expectations. As long as I’m not hurting anyone, I will do what makes me happy,” she said in a previous interview.
Her recent comments have reignited discussions about the expectations placed on women when it comes to dating and marriage in Nigeria.
Social commentators note that many women are now prioritising emotional and financial stability over societal pressure to settle down.
Relationship experts argue that financial compatibility is a key factor in sustaining a healthy relationship. “When one partner consistently feels financially burdened, resentment can grow, and that often leads to conflict,” said relationship coach Kemi Fashina.
“Nkechi Blessing’s experience reflects the reality of many women who have learned the hard way that love alone is not enough to sustain a partnership.”
For now, Nkechi Blessing appears focused on her career and personal growth. She continues to engage with her fans on social media, sharing snippets of her work and behind-the-scenes moments from her life.
“I’m taking my time, enjoying my singlehood, and working on becoming the best version of myself,” she said. “If love comes along again, I’ll be ready, but this time, I’m not dating down.”
