The Nigeria Police Force has launched an internal investigation into a viral video that shows actress Angela Okorie jogging in public while flanked by armed police officers.
The footage, which spread quickly across social media platforms, has triggered widespread reactions and raised concerns about the conduct of the officers involved.
Viral video sparks controversy
The video, which surfaced earlier this week, shows Okorie jogging outdoors with several uniformed and armed police officers closely following her. While the video initially caught attention for featuring the popular actress, the focus soon shifted to the presence of armed security personnel casually accompanying her on what appeared to be a routine jog.
Critics quickly questioned why public officers, whose services are meant to ensure public safety, were assigned to escort a celebrity in what seems to be a private activity.
Police react with official statement
On Wednesday, the Nigeria Police Force issued an official response through its verified X (formerly Twitter) account. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the officers’ actions as inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards expected of Nigerian law enforcement personnel.
“The Nigeria Police Force strongly frowns at the conduct of armed police officers seen in a viral video trailing actress Angela Okorie while she jogged, an act considered inconsistent with the professional standards and decorum expected of personnel of the Force,” the statement read.
Investigation underway
Adejobi confirmed that the police had commenced internal reviews to identify the officers involved. The goal, he said, is to determine the circumstances under which the video was filmed and to assess whether the officers acted within the scope of their duties.
He also indicated that appropriate disciplinary actions would be taken once the investigation is complete.
“The incident, which appears to have occurred on or around a movie set, has sparked widespread public concern and criticism,” the statement continued. “While it remains unclear whether the scene was part of a scripted production, the conduct of the officers seen in the video falls short of the standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Linked to film project?
Though Okorie has not released an official statement regarding the video, there is speculation that the clip might have been recorded during the shooting of her new project, Queens of Guns. She has been promoting the movie heavily in recent weeks.
If the scene is indeed part of a film set, the question remains whether the officers were formally assigned to the production or participated without proper authorisation.
Mixed public reactions
The video has sparked a flurry of reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment and anger. While some questioned the use of public resources for private purposes, others defended the actress, insisting no laws were broken.
Below are a few of the comments from social media:
- @thebishopoflagos: “Una get standard? Smh.”
- @issyluv: “They are private citizens; they should be able to hire private security. In a sane country, that’s what would be done. Police officers are attached to just anyone as long as they can cough up money.”
- @iduna_omozee: “Misplaced priority.”
- @barrysome: “Good to read this from the official handle of the police. Glad your team is paying attention. Commendable.”
- @wf_iscobossy: “Focus on Benue killings first.”
- @mattizcomedy: “I really do not see anything wrong with the police men jogging with her.”
- @dassa: “Una don leave Benue killings come focus on Angela.”
- @basbeegram: “Go and find your officers robbing people and molesting them on the highways.”
Conclusion
The Nigeria Police Force appears determined to uphold its professional standards and has promised a full review of the incident. While the investigation unfolds, questions continue to swirl about how public officers are deployed and whether celebrities receive privileges at the expense of public security.
Angela Okorie, for now, has remained silent amid the growing debate.
