Nollywood veteran Olaiya Igwe has expressed deep regret over an incident that took place years ago, involving popular gospel singer Tope Alabi.
The actor admitted that he failed to keep a promise he made to the singer on one of the most important days of her life—her wedding day.
Speaking in a recent interview with Baba Ibe TV, Igwe recounted how the situation unfolded. At the time, he had just purchased a luxury car after the success of his hit movie Ololade Mr Money. The car, a Mercedes-Benz V-Boot, carried a personalized inscription, “Ololade Mr Money 1.”
Tope Alabi’s request and Igwe’s initial agreement
According to Igwe, Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji, visited him while preparing for their wedding. They asked if they could borrow his new car for the occasion. Igwe agreed without hesitation, assuring them they could use it as their official wedding ride. However, when the wedding day arrived, he failed to keep his word.
Fear and last-minute doubts
He revealed that the decision to disappoint them was not made lightly. After giving his word, he suddenly had doubts. He feared that armed robbers might attack the couple and steal the vehicle. This fear led him to ignore their calls the night before the wedding. Instead of explaining his concerns, he simply refused to hand over the car.

“I disappointed Tope Alabi,” he admitted with remorse. “She and her husband trusted me, but I failed them. I ignored her calls because I was scared of what could happen. But that was wrong of me. I should have at least informed them.”
Lingering guilt despite forgiveness
Looking back, Igwe acknowledges that his actions hurt the gospel singer. Even though he later apologized, he still feels guilty about it. He noted that despite everything, Tope Alabi has been blessed with multiple luxury cars—many of which he himself cannot afford.
“Today, she owns countless luxury cars. Meanwhile, I still regret what I did,” he confessed. “I once sought her forgiveness during a professional meeting in Ogun State. But the pain still lingers. My biggest regret is disappointing Tope Alabi.”
Lessons from a painful regret
The veteran actor’s confession highlights the weight of broken promises, especially when they affect relationships with loved ones. Even though time has passed, Igwe still carries the burden of his past mistake.
