Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has claimed that he coined the popular phrase ‘Detty December’, now widely associated with end-of-year festivities and tourism in Nigeria.
Speaking during his Detty Rave concert in Accra, Mr Eazi said the phrase was created while he was working as a show promoter in Ghana, alongside friends.

According to the singer, the idea was born out of a desire to brand December events in a way that reflected freedom, fun, and intentional enjoyment during the holiday season.
“While working as a show promoter with my friends, I suggested that we call our December event ‘Detty December.’ Hashtag Detty December,” he said.
Mr Eazi explained that the phrase was first used around 2016, adding that its meaning goes beyond partying.
“So in 2016, me and my guys invented Detty December. And Detty December is all about going back to your roots, having fun and enjoying life intentionally,” he stated.
Despite laying claim to the origin of the term, the singer was quick to stress that the phenomenon has grown beyond individual ownership.
“Detty December is bigger than Mr Eazi. It’s bigger than anybody. Detty December is for all of us,” he added.
The New Daily Prime recalls that the phrase previously sparked controversy in 2019 after Deola Art Alade, a Nigerian entrepreneur and wife of singer Darey Art Alade, secured a legal trademark for ‘Detty December’.
The move triggered widespread backlash from Nigerians, many of whom argued that the phrase is a shared cultural expression rather than a brand that should be privately owned.
Since then, ‘Detty December’ has continued to grow into a major cultural movement, attracting tourists, international artistes, and global attention to Nigeria’s festive season.
