Nollywood actress May Edochie, the estranged wife of actor Yul Edochie, has initiated legal action against her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, accusing him of cyberbullying, defamation, and cyberstalking.
The actress, through her legal representatives Graylaw Partners, issued a cease-and-desist notice alleging that Ugwuonye repeatedly published damaging posts about her on social media, causing reputational harm and personal distress.
According to the notice, Ugwuonye’s actions went beyond defamation, amounting to harassment, ridicule, and malicious attacks that put May’s personal safety at risk. The notice read in part:
“These posts are a calculated assault on our client’s reputation and have further imperiled her safety through malicious threats and false allegations. Beyond your own publications, you have incited third parties to amplify these communications, causing her severe and irreparable harm.”
May’s legal team demanded that Ugwuonye immediately halt all defamatory publications, retract the posts already made, and issue a public apology across all his social media platforms.
In addition, the actress is seeking ₦1 billion in damages for the alleged harm caused by Ugwuonye’s actions. The notice also warned that failure to comply could lead to further legal proceedings, signaling the possibility of a full-blown lawsuit if the demands are not met.

This legal action underscores the growing concern around social media conduct and the serious consequences of online harassment, particularly when it involves public figures. Legal experts note that cyber defamation and stalking cases are increasingly common, with courts taking a tougher stance on online attacks that threaten individuals’ safety or reputations.
May Edochie, known for her roles in popular Nollywood films and her high-profile marriage to Yul Edochie, has maintained a strong public presence. The ongoing legal dispute comes amid continued public scrutiny of her personal life, particularly following her separation from the actor.
While Ugwuonye has not publicly responded to the notice, the case is expected to attract attention given the high-profile nature of both parties. Analysts predict that the legal battle could set an important precedent regarding cyber harassment and defamation involving public figures in Nigeria.
Observers have also noted the broader implications of such cases on social media behavior, warning that unchecked online attacks can escalate into legal consequences. May’s decision to pursue the matter formally demonstrates a willingness to hold individuals accountable for online misconduct.
As this case unfolds, all eyes will be on whether Ugwuonye complies with the demands or faces potential litigation. Meanwhile, fans of May Edochie have taken to social media to express support for the actress, praising her decision to protect her reputation and personal safety.
The coming weeks may reveal how Nigerian courts navigate cases involving defamation, cyberbullying, and social media accountability, especially when the parties involved are well-known public figures.
