Reality TV star and influencer Tacha Akide has sparked online conversation after sharing her thoughts on the financial struggles of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom.
In a candid video posted online, the former Big Brother Naija housemate, who now lives in the UK, spoke out against the widespread belief that life abroad is always better.
She challenged the idea that Nigerians overseas are living in luxury, saying that many are barely getting by.
Life abroad not always rosy
Tacha stated clearly that life in the UK is not as easy as many Nigerians at home believe. According to her, the high cost of living in the UK is forcing many people into financial hardship. She argued that, in some cases, Nigerians back home live more comfortably than those abroad.
“You see those of you who always think that everyone in the UK is rich,” she said. “Most people here are broke. In fact, the most broke people I’ve met are the ones I met here in the UK.”
She continued by pointing out that living expenses in the UK are high and constantly rising. “Everyone is holding themselves together,” she said. “It is expensive.”
A wake-up call for Nigerians at home
Tacha warned Nigerians considering relocation to the UK to adjust their expectations. She emphasised that while it’s okay to seek better opportunities, people should not do so under the illusion that everything is easy or luxurious abroad.
“Trust me, it’s not rosy here,” she said. “If you want to move, that’s fine. But don’t come with the idea that it’s all smooth and beautiful.”
She highlighted the high transportation costs as an example. “You could easily spend ₦300,000 on taxis in a single day or over ₦1 million on a car within a week, unless you plan to use the train,” she said. “Think about your decision carefully.”
Social media reactions
Tacha’s remarks quickly spread across social media, triggering mixed reactions. Some agreed with her, while others argued that life abroad still offered better quality of life.
Here are some of the top responses:
- @oluchiafundu wrote: “She is saying the truth, 100%.”
- @okunenyeife added: “Anyone walking around the UK doing content creation is either new in town or still trying to find their path.”
- @iammaryam_raz commented: “We never hear word since Tacha came UK.”
- @e.f.e.m.e.n.a_kylian said: “They may be broke, but they have basic amenities. Don’t compare it to us who still shout ‘UP NEPA.’”
- @godwinrealest remarked: “No wonder my uncle spent 25 years there and came back with nothing to show for it.”
- @joyaustin4743 asked: “You all care so much about money. What about quality of life? How’s the quality of life in Nigeria, even with money?”
A conversation worth having
Tacha’s video has added to the ongoing discussion about the true nature of living abroad. While many Nigerians dream of relocating to countries like the UK for better opportunities, her comments serve as a reality check.
Yes, the UK offers steady electricity, better infrastructure, and a more structured system. However, the cost of living, rent, transport, food, and healthcare, can be overwhelming for immigrants, especially those without high-paying jobs or solid financial support.
For many, the dream of “japa” (relocating abroad) often comes with unexpected sacrifices and challenges. Tacha’s experience reminds everyone that greener pastures aren’t always green at first glance.
In the end, the conversation she sparked may help more Nigerians at home and abroad reflect on what truly matters: not just money or location, but peace of mind, comfort, and long-term stability.
