Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has spoken out in response to the backlash over his recent birthday message to fellow actor Kate Henshaw.
The controversial post, shared on Instagram, sparked mixed reactions due to its personal tone and suggestive language.
In the post, Iyke praised Henshaw, expressed past romantic interest, and reflected on their early days in Nollywood. One line in particular caught attention: “You knew all that time I wanted to hit that.” Many Nigerians found the message inappropriate, especially on Henshaw’s birthday.
Among those who criticised him was actor Gideon Okeke, who accused Iyke of crossing the line. Okeke argued that the post shared “too much information” and was disrespectful.
Jim Iyke clarifies
Following the backlash, Jim Iyke addressed the issue during an interview. He stood by his words and explained that the message was not meant to be taken sexually or disrespectfully.
“I meant every word I said,” Iyke stated firmly. “I don’t speak carelessly. I choose my words carefully. I’ve known Kate for over 20 years. We’ve grown together as friends, like brother and sister.”
He described the message as a “wordplay” born out of deep familiarity and emotional honesty. According to him, it was a private expression shared in a public space, something he believed Kate would understand.
“It was written from a place of comfort,” he explained. “These are thoughts people usually keep in their heads. But sometimes, you decide to put it into words and let the world see how you truly feel about someone who has been part of your journey.”
Iyke stressed that there was nothing sexual or romantic about the post. “It doesn’t suggest I’m dating her. It was not about lust,” he said. “It was a genuine message from a place of love and respect.”
He concluded by saying the tribute was simply an honest and emotional gesture towards someone he deeply respects and cares about. Despite the mixed reactions, he said he had no regrets about expressing his feelings publicly.
