Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has admitted that she rarely likes her songs after recording them.
Despite her growing success, the singer revealed that she often feels her music could be better.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the “Rush” hitmaker explained that she is highly self-critical. She constantly pushes herself to improve, making it difficult for her to be satisfied with her own work.
“I usually don’t like my songs after recording them. It’s so bad. I don’t even know why,” she said. “I just feel like it can always get better, and I keep trying to push myself until it’s perfect.”
A rare exception: Woman commando
While Ayra Starr is usually dissatisfied with her songs, she made an exception for Woman Commando, her latest hit featuring Anita and Coco Jones. She admitted that this track felt different from the rest. Unlike her usual experience, she found herself loving the song with every listen.
“Woman Commando was the one song where I felt like I went crazy on it. This is dope,” she stated.
The track has been receiving widespread praise, solidifying her place as one of the most exciting voices in Afrobeats today.
A rising star in afrobeats
Ayra Starr has quickly become a force in the music industry. With hits like Rush and Bloody Samaritan, she has captivated audiences with her unique blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and pop. Her energetic performances and deep lyrics have made her a fan favorite both in Nigeria and internationally.
The singer’s rapid rise to fame has not come without challenges. Being a perfectionist means she is always striving for more, which can sometimes make it difficult for her to enjoy her own music. This struggle is common among artists who push themselves to the highest standards.

Musical inspirations
Ayra Starr has previously shared that she draws inspiration from some of the biggest names in music. In an earlier interview, she mentioned that she listens to SZA, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Rema in her free time. Their influence is evident in her music, which effortlessly blends different genres to create her distinct sound.
Her ability to take inspiration from various artists while maintaining her originality has helped her stand out in the crowded music industry.
The pressure to deliver hits
The music industry can be demanding, especially for young artists like Ayra Starr. With each song, there is pressure to deliver a hit that resonates with fans. For someone who is her own biggest critic, this pressure can be overwhelming.
Despite her struggles with self-doubt, Ayra Starr continues to push boundaries. Her openness about not always liking her songs gives fans a glimpse into the creative process and the effort that goes into making hit records.
Looking ahead
As Ayra Starr continues her journey in the music industry, her perfectionism may push her to even greater heights. She has already achieved remarkable success, but her drive suggests that she is only getting started.
With Woman Commando receiving widespread praise, she may have finally found a song she truly loves. However, knowing her relentless work ethic, she will likely continue striving for the next big hit.
Ayra Starr’s honesty and dedication make her one of the most intriguing artists in Afrobeats today. Whether she likes her songs or not, fans certainly do, and her career shows no signs of slowing down.
