The Lagos State Police Command has formally dropped its case against Pastor Paul Adefarasin, founder of House on the Rock Church, after investigations confirmed that a controversial object he was seen holding in a viral video was a stun gun and not a firearm.
The cleric, who had earlier presented himself at the Command’s headquarters in Ikeja for questioning, was released on bail while detectives probed the incident. According to a statement issued Wednesday by Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi, inquiries included a full interrogation and cautionary statement from Adefarasin before the case was reviewed.
“Following our findings, the Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” the statement read.
The footage, which circulated in June, showed the pastor driving a Range Rover and interacting with another road user while holding a black device. The clip sparked widespread speculation, with many alleging it resembled a pistol.
Adefarasin, however, repeatedly denied the claims, insisting on social media and during church services that he had never brandished a firearm. “I do not carry a pistol, I do not have a licence for one, and I pointed no firearm at anybody,” he told his congregation during a livestreamed service, describing the controversy as “hurtful” and driven by “clickbaiters looking for more money.”
While the police have now closed the file, earlier comments by Lagos Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh noted that the use of a stun gun to threaten or intimidate still falls under offences recognized by law.
