Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has condemned a viral social media post advising Igbo men to avoid marrying Igbo women, describing the claim as dangerous and rooted in a refusal to take accountability.
The controversial tweet, posted by an X user, suggested that Igbo men should seek wives from East Africa, particularly Rwanda, rather than risk being “falsely accused” of raping their daughters by their Igbo spouses.

The post read:
“Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying an Igbo woman that’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for a wife… Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda, and pick a damsel.”
Reacting to the tweet, Nnaji, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, criticised the sentiment as a deflection from personal responsibility.
“In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it,” she wrote.
While some users defended the original post by arguing it was directed only at false accusers and not all Igbo women, Nnaji rejected the distinction, warning against blanket generalisations that fuel harmful stereotypes.
She added:
“The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women.’”
Nnaji’s response has sparked widespread discussion on misogyny, ethnic profiling, and the dangers of framing serious issues such as sexual abuse around stereotypes rather than accountability.
