The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into allegations made by Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips, who claimed that its operatives extorted ₦10 million from him during his detention in November 2024.
The rapper made the revelation during a recent podcast appearance, recounting what he described as a harrowing experience while in the anti-graft agency’s custody.
According to Oladips, he was detained for five days, during which time no incriminating evidence was found against him.

However, he alleged that officials of the EFCC still demanded and collected ₦10 million before granting him his freedom.
Describing the conditions of his detention, the Zaddy crooner said he was held in an overcrowded cell where detainees were “packed like sardines” and given “terrible food.” He stated that the experience left him deeply traumatized and disillusioned about the justice system.
Following the widespread circulation of his claims on social media, the EFCC swiftly responded, announcing that it had commenced a full investigation into the allegations. The Commission disclosed that the operatives involved in the rapper’s case had been summoned to its headquarters and relieved of their operational duties pending the outcome of the probe.
In an official statement, the anti-graft agency emphasized its commitment to transparency, discipline, and accountability, stressing that it would not hesitate to take action against any officer found guilty of misconduct.
The EFCC’s statement read in part:
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission views with great seriousness the allegation of extortion made against some of its operatives by Nigerian rapper, Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji (a.k.a Oladips). The hip-hop artist gravely alleged that operatives of the Commission extorted a sum of ₦10,000,000 (Ten Million Naira) from him before securing his release when he was arrested alongside other suspected internet fraudsters.”
The agency further clarified that Oladips’s claims are being “diligently investigated” and that appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings.
“Officers in the team that handled his case have been summoned to the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission and relieved of their operational duties pending the conclusion of the investigation. The Commission is serious about its value of integrity and will take necessary action against any staff found to be culpable,” the statement added.
However, the EFCC also warned that if the allegations turn out to be false or intended to damage the Commission’s reputation, the agency would not hesitate to impose sanctions on the rapper.
The Commission urged the public to remain patient and await the outcome of the investigation while reaffirming its commitment to fighting financial crimes with fairness and accountability.
Oladips’s allegations have sparked public outrage and renewed debate about police and agency accountability in Nigeria, with many Nigerians calling for transparency and justice in the case.
