Nigerian singer and songwriter Sydney Esiri, better known as Dr Sid, has officially confirmed his relocation to the United States.
The artist, known for his hit single “Over The Moon”, shared the news during a recent appearance on the “No Man’s Friend” podcast.
Dr Sid revealed that he moved to the U.S. after securing a job opportunity with a company based in New York.
“I now live in the U.S.,” Dr Sid declared openly. “I left Nigeria last year after I got a job with a company in New York that offered me an opportunity to move to the States and live anywhere in the U.S.
I have family in Houston, and my best friend lives here, so Houston, Texas, was an easy choice.
And that is it. I’ve been working here for the last year and a half,” he explained.
Dr Sid’s relocation marks a significant shift in the career of an artist who has been a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry for over two decades.
He first rose to prominence in 2002 as a member of the music group Da Trybe, making his mark on the Nigerian hip-hop scene with his contribution to the hit track “Oya”. The song featured notable artists such as Sasha, 2-Shotz, Timi, DEL, and Trybesmen members Eldee, Kb, and Freestyle.
In 2003, Dr Sid released his debut solo single, “Don’t Stop”.
However, he briefly stepped away from the music scene to complete his university studies, eventually becoming a qualified dentist.
After obtaining his degree, he relocated to the UK, where he collaborated with prominent artists such as JJC & the 419 Squad, Felix Duke, KAS, R70, D’Prince, and D’Banj.
In 2005, Dr Sid began work on his studio album, “Prognosis”, which featured the single “Raise Da Roof”. However, he ultimately abandoned the project.
Furthermore, In 2007, he made a pivotal decision to leave his career as a dentist, which he had practised for three years, to focus entirely on his passion for music.
This move led him to sign with Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits Records, one of Nigeria’s leading record labels at the time.
Dr Sid’s debut solo studio album, “Turning Point”, was released in April 2010 under Mo’ Hits Records. The album featured popular tracks such as “Over The Moon” and “Pop Something”, which solidified his place in the Nigerian music scene.
However, the dissolution of Mo’ Hits Records in 2012, following a fallout between partners D’Banj and Don Jazzy, prompted Dr Sid to join Don Jazzy’s new label, Mavin Records.
Under Mavin Records, Dr Sid continued to thrive, releasing his sophomore album “Siduction” in December 2013.
The album showcased his versatility and growth as an artist. Beyond music, Dr Sid also explored acting, making his debut in 2014 in Moses Inwang’s film “The Last 3 Digits”.
He played the role of an NYSC corps member, starring alongside Nollywood actor Nonso Diobi.
Dr Sid’s decision to relocate to the U.S. and pursue a professional opportunity outside of music marks a new chapter in his life.
While he now balances his music career with his new role in the corporate world, fans remain eager to see how he will continue to contribute to the entertainment industry from his new base in Houston, Texas.
