Music mogul and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has shared strong views on record label dynamics, saying many label bosses fail to properly respect their artists.
The veteran producer made the comments in a post on X, where he advised new label heads to treat their artists like superstars from the very beginning.
According to Don Jazzy, respect is a key foundation for building successful music careers. He stressed that if a label’s goal is to create a major star, that intention must be reflected in how the artist is treated from day one.

“I might be wrong, but I’ve noticed some record label bosses don’t respect their artists,” he wrote. “If you know you are aiming at building a huge superstar, start from day one to accord them that respect.”
The Mavin boss explained that his own leadership style focuses on allowing artists to shine while he supports them from the background.
He said he gives his artists the spotlight most of the time and only steps in when necessary.
“90% of the time around my artists, I let them be the superstars that they are,” he added. “It’s only 10% of the time that I really need to be Supremos.”
Don Jazzy also addressed the growing number of young label executives in the industry. He noted that many of them look up to him but often misunderstand what truly makes his approach successful.
According to him, some focus too much on copying his “Don” persona rather than learning the values behind his leadership.
“And the thing is most of the new label bosses actually look up to me but copy the wrong thing because of my Don persona,” he said.
He emphasized that building a successful record label is not about control or dominance, but about nurturing talent, showing respect, and creating an environment where artists can grow confidently.
Don Jazzy’s comments have sparked discussions across the music industry, with many praising his artist-first philosophy.
Over the years, his label has produced some of Nigeria’s biggest stars, including Rema, Ayra Starr, Johnny Drille, and Ladipoe.
Don Jazzy’s message serves as a reminder that respect and trust remain essential ingredients for long-term success in the entertainment industry.
