DJ Jimmy Jatt: I lost my sight in 2020

DJ Jimmy Jatt opens up about his health struggles, including vision loss, chronic kidney disease, and how a life-saving kidney transplant changed his journey.

In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the celebrated DJ detailed his journey from losing his sight to battling chronic kidney disease.

The renowned Stylee hitmaker first revealed in 2022 that he had undergone a successful kidney transplant.

Now, he has shared more about the challenges he faced leading up to that life-changing surgery.

Early signs of trouble

In 2019, Jimmy Jatt decided it was time to broaden his horizons. After spending most of his life in Lagos, he yearned to explore the world. “I wanted to spend more time outside Nigeria,” he said. “I’ve lived all my life here, so I wanted to experience Europe, America, and other places.”

However, his plans took a sharp turn in 2020. Health issues emerged, starting with a sudden loss of sight. Travel restrictions due to the pandemic forced him to remain in Nigeria.

He underwent surgery to restore his vision, which was successful, but it marked the beginning of a much larger health battle.

Diagnosis and relocation

Following his eye surgery, Jimmy Jatt decided to take a break and pursue his dream of living abroad. He relocated to the United States, hoping for a fresh start. Unfortunately, his health took another hit. During his time in the U.S., he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.

The DJ began dialysis treatments, a grueling process that managed his condition but left him drained.

Eventually, he returned to Nigeria for a kidney transplant, a critical step in his recovery. The transplant was successful, but the journey wasn’t over. “After the surgery, I needed time to recover fully, so I stayed away from the public eye for a while,” he explained.

A quiet recovery

Jimmy Jatt chose to recover away from the spotlight. “As soon as I was discharged, I left Nigeria again,” he said. While abroad, he resumed DJing, performing in both America and Europe. Despite his struggles, his passion for music kept him going.

In December, he made the decision to return to Nigeria, feeling ready to reconnect with his roots and audience.

Dispelling myths about kidney disease

The veteran DJ took the opportunity to address misconceptions about kidney disease. He emphasized that lifestyle choices are not always to blame. “People often think it’s about drinking or smoking, but that’s not always the case,” he said. Jimmy Jatt revealed that his condition was caused by diabetes, not substance use.

He shared that he has never smoked and quit drinking alcohol long ago, dispelling stereotypes and encouraging others to prioritize their health.

Looking ahead

DJ Jimmy Jatt’s story is a testament to resilience and determination. From losing his sight to enduring dialysis and undergoing a transplant, he has faced each challenge with courage.

Now back in Nigeria, he remains an icon in the music industry, inspiring others with his strength and honesty.

Through his journey, he hopes to shed light on health issues that many are reluctant to discuss. By sharing his experience, DJ Jimmy Jatt continues to make an impact beyond music, proving that life’s toughest battles can be overcome with perseverance and support.

This is more than just a comeback for DJ Jimmy Jatt—it’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, a new chapter can begin.
