American rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG, has described negative Western portrayals of Nigeria as misleading and exaggerated.
The hip-hop star, who is currently holidaying in Lagos, said Nigeria is far less dangerous than it is often depicted abroad, insisting that the country is “nowhere near” as unsafe as the United States.
Speaking in a video broadcast, DDG argued that while Nigeria faces security challenges, they are not comparable to the level of gun violence and gangsterism common in America.

“I honestly think America is the most dangerous country,” he said. “I don’t think Nigeria is as dangerous as America, nowhere near. No doubt, there is insecurity in Nigeria, but gun violence and gangsterism are not common here like they are in the US.”
The rapper encouraged foreigners to visit Nigeria and experience the country firsthand rather than relying on stereotypes.
“If anybody is thinking about coming to Nigeria, pull up,” he added.
DDG also addressed misinformation he received before his trip, revealing that he was warned Nigerian food was unhealthy and advised to boil water before drinking.
Contrary to those claims, he said his experience had been positive, describing Nigerian meals as healthy and praising local dishes, especially jollof rice.
His comments have since sparked conversations online about media narratives, safety perceptions, and Nigeria’s growing appeal to international celebrities and tourists.
