Popular Nigerian singer, Davido, has stirred reactions online after responding to social media criticism with a bold and sarcastic statement.
The Afrobeats star, known for his outspoken nature, said that in his next life, he would return as a vulcaniser.
The comment came after a wave of online trolling, with some users accusing him of flaunting his father’s wealth, especially his access to private jets. Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, is the son of billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke.
“It’s my birthright,” Davido declares
On Tuesday, the singer took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to express his frustration. He didn’t hold back as he clapped back at those criticising his lifestyle and background.
He wrote, “This free jet wey I dey fly all around the world dey really pain una. I’m sorry it’s my birthright. In my next life, I go come back as a vulcaniser. Ma binu.” The Yoruba phrase “ma binu” means “don’t be angry” in English.
Davido’s tweet, laced with sarcasm and humour, was a direct jab at those who belittle his accomplishments by attributing them solely to his wealthy upbringing.
Singer defends his success story
This is not the first time Davido has addressed the backlash tied to his family’s wealth. In several interviews and posts, he has revealed that being from a rich home has made him a target in the music industry.
According to him, some people believe he didn’t earn his success through hard work. However, the “Unavailable” crooner insists that he has worked just as hard as, if not harder than, other artists to prove himself.
Despite the criticism, Davido has maintained a solid presence in the music scene for over a decade. He is known for hits such as “Fall,” “If,” and “Feel.”
Not the first time he’s been trolled
Davido’s flashy lifestyle has always attracted attention. From sharing photos of expensive cars to posting updates from luxury destinations, the singer often gives fans a glimpse into his high-end lifestyle. While many fans celebrate him, others accuse him of rubbing his wealth in people’s faces.
The latest round of criticism came after he shared visuals of himself using his father’s private jet. This triggered some X users who questioned his achievements and accused him of relying on family money rather than talent.
Fans react to his vulcaniser comment
As expected, his latest post triggered mixed reactions. While some fans praised him for standing up for himself, others said he should be more humble and stop mentioning his wealth.
Supporters argued that he has every right to enjoy his privileges and shouldn’t be blamed for being born into wealth. They commended him for using his platform to give back through philanthropy and support emerging artists.
On the other hand, critics believe the singer could do more to stay grounded and focus on his music instead of addressing trolls.
