The Dangote Group has expressed its deepest condolences over the death of Ruth Otabor, who tragically passed away following a road accident involving one of the company’s trucks in Auchi, Edo State.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the conglomerate confirmed that despite intensive medical efforts and financial support, Otabor could not survive the injuries she sustained.
“On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read.
The company explained that from the moment the accident occurred, its officials and insurance partners had taken full responsibility for Otabor’s medical care. According to the statement, the victim’s treatment was funded entirely by the company, which covered hospital expenses and related costs.
Plans had also been finalised to fly her abroad for advanced medical care in India. However, her attending doctors were unable to give clearance for her travel due to the severity of her injuries. Unfortunately, Otabor passed away before she could begin the treatment abroad.
“Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today,” the statement noted.

The Dangote Group emphasised that the safety of lives remains a central priority in its operations. The company assured the public that it is not only mourning the tragic loss but is also taking deliberate steps to improve safety measures across its logistics and transport operations.
“As a responsible corporate citizen, safety, accountability, and compassion remain at the heart of our operations. This incident is a painful reminder that we must continuously strengthen our safety systems to prevent such tragedies in the future,” the company said.
The statement further reassured Nigerians that Dangote Group has zero tolerance for negligence and is committed to holding drivers and contractors accountable to the highest standards of road safety.
The statement concluded with prayers for the repose of Ruth’s soul and strength for her family during their bereavement.
The incident highlights the recurring challenge of road safety in Nigeria. Accidents involving heavy-duty trucks have been a persistent problem, with calls for companies operating large fleets to adopt stricter safety regulations and continuous driver training.
Industry experts argue that, beyond corporate responsibility, government agencies must also step up efforts in enforcing roadworthiness standards, conducting regular checks, and improving road infrastructure to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
