‘I vomited blood for six months’, 9ice recounted ‘spiritual attack’
Nigerian singer Alexander Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, opened up about a terrifying health scare that he believed was caused by a spiritual attack.
During a recent interview on The Nancy Isime Show, the ‘Gongo Aso’ hitmaker revealed that he vomited blood continuously for six months in 2009 and 2010.
According to him, the experience forced him to leave his home, as it became clear that the cause wasn’t medical.
“It wasn’t something doctors could fix,” 9ice said, responding to a question about spiritual battles he had faced in his music career. “I was just vomiting blood in my own house. I had to run away.”
He said the healing process only began after someone introduced him to Ifa, the traditional Yoruba religious system. That encounter, he said, changed his beliefs and led him to fully embrace traditional African spirituality.
“I’m not a Christian or a Muslim,” he declared. “I’m a Babalawo. I’m a traditionalist. I just wish I had known Ifa earlier.”
9ice added that he now understood what the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti stood for, especially his devotion to Ogun, a Yoruba deity. “People mocked Fela for it,” he said, “but now, I get it.”
He urged more Africans to reconnect with their roots and stop treating traditional religions as taboo.
“It’s who we are,” he said. “We need to stop being ashamed of our own culture.”
