Veteran entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy or Area Fada, has publicly rebuked political commentator Deji Adeyanju over his recent remarks about Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a strongly worded post on his X handle, Charly Boy accused Adeyanju of peddling “lies and baseless claims” aimed at tarnishing Obi’s reputation.
He described Adeyanju’s conduct as an attempt to discredit one of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition figures in order to curry favor with political “paymasters.”
Charly Boy was reacting to Adeyanju’s allegation that Obi once tried to bribe him. The veteran activist dismissed the claim as both “reckless” and “irresponsible,” stressing that Adeyanju had crossed a line by attempting to drag Obi into what he described as “gutter politics.”
“Deji Adeyanju, na wa for you o! You don carry ya mouth waka go where e no belong. Na so so lie lie and yeye talk you dey yarn about Peter Obi, just to trend and please ya paymasters. Shame no dey catch you?” Charly Boy wrote.
The self-styled Area Fada defended Obi as one of the few political figures who still inspire hope in a country plagued by corruption, insecurity, and economic hardship.
Obi drags Deji Adeyanju to court over alleged defamation
According to him, Obi represents a rare voice of conscience in Nigerian politics, unlike Adeyanju who, he alleged, has reduced himself to an “errand boy for chop money politics.”
“Obi na man wey still get small conscience for this obodo wey don spoil finish. Na him still dey give millions of Nigerians hope say beta Nigeria dey possible. But you wey suppose dey stand for truth, you turn yourself to errand boy for chop money politics,” Charly Boy added.
The entertainer also issued a stern warning to Adeyanju, cautioning that spreading falsehoods could have serious consequences.
He hinted at possible legal action, saying Adeyanju’s behavior could make him “chop legal breakfast,” a Nigerian slang that means facing the law.
“This ya reckless and irresponsible behavior fit make you chop legal breakfast,” he wrote, stressing that Obi’s detractors would not be allowed to smear his image without consequences.
Charly Boy’s outburst comes against the backdrop of growing tensions in Nigeria’s political space, where opposition leaders and commentators frequently exchange accusations.
Since the 2023 elections, Obi has continued to maintain a strong support base, particularly among young Nigerians who see him as a symbol of integrity and accountability.
Adeyanju, on the other hand, has often courted controversy with his outspoken views on politics and governance. While some see him as a fearless activist who speaks truth to power, others accuse him of inconsistency and political opportunism.
His latest claim against Obi appears to have struck a nerve with Charly Boy, who has long positioned himself as a defender of Obi’s movement for a “new Nigeria.”
The veteran activist insisted that those who seek to malign Obi are only playing into the hands of political forces who want to silence alternative voices.
He argued that Obi’s message of reform and good governance remains a threat to entrenched interests and, as such, attracts coordinated attacks from opponents.
“The struggle for a better Nigeria must not be derailed by clout-chasing antics,” Charly Boy declared, reiterating that millions of citizens still look to Obi as a credible alternative to the ruling class.
Observers note that Charly Boy’s defense of Obi reflects a wider sentiment among many Nigerians who remain disillusioned with the state of governance.
For them, Obi’s campaign during the 2023 elections though unsuccessful represented a shift in the nation’s political culture, giving rise to what is now known as the “Obidient Movement.”
Charly Boy has consistently aligned himself with this movement, often using his platform to call out critics and amplify Obi’s message of accountability.
His latest post reinforces his position as one of the most vocal supporters of Obi in Nigeria’s entertainment and activist circles.
As the political atmosphere heats up ahead of future elections, exchanges like this between high-profile activists highlight the growing polarization in public discourse.
For many Nigerians, the debate goes beyond personalities; it speaks to the larger struggle for credibility, integrity, and hope in a political system many consider broken.
Charly Boy’s intervention, therefore, is not only a defense of Obi but also a reminder that the battle for Nigeria’s future as he frames it, is still very much alive.
