“2020 was a serious year. Life humbled me so much. You know when God puts something sweet in your mouth and removes it? That was what happened in 2020,” he said.
According to Asake, he did not fully understand the purpose of the setback at the time, but later realised it was part of a bigger plan to prepare him for success.
“At that time, I did not know that God was building me. I did not expect it,” he added.
The singer noted that the same period eventually led to the creation of his breakout sound, including the viral line “Me I no dey cap, me I no dey form,” which helped launch his career.
Reflecting further, Asake also spoke about his long-standing ambition to take his career beyond Nigeria, particularly to the United States.
He revealed that even before achieving fame, he had always envisioned relocating to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams.
“Before I travelled, Los Angeles was a place I liked. Even when I was with my friends, I told them that I was going to leave this country and go to California,” he said.
After making the move, the singer said he embraced the experience, focusing on living out his dream without overthinking the process.
“When I got to California, I was just like, bro, I will be here. Let me just live my dream,” he added.
Asake’s story highlights the role of perseverance and belief in navigating setbacks, as well as the importance of vision in achieving long-term success.
