Legendary American singer and songwriter Billy Joel has been diagnosed with a brain condition known as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
The 76-year-old music icon revealed his health status in a statement released by his management on Friday through his official Instagram page.
The announcement came as a shock to fans worldwide, as it also included news that Joel has cancelled all his upcoming concerts. The tour dates had been scheduled across Europe and North America, running from April 26 through July 3.
What is normal pressure hydrocephalus?
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, or NPH, is a brain disorder caused by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This fluid increase leads to pressure inside the skull, which can interfere with brain function.
Unlike other forms of hydrocephalus, NPH does not always lead to high pressure readings, which can make it harder to diagnose. Symptoms typically include trouble with walking and balance, memory problems, and loss of bladder control. In Joel’s case, his team said that the symptoms have affected his vision, hearing, and balance, especially after recent live performances.
Doctors recommend immediate rest
According to the statement, doctors advised Joel to pause all performances while he undergoes physical therapy and receives proper treatment. The management explained that Joel is now following a detailed medical plan to address the disorder and improve his condition.
“Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” the statement read.
Concert cancellations and refunds
Fans who purchased tickets for the now-cancelled shows will receive automatic refunds, the statement confirmed. “Your refund will automatically be processed back to the original payment used for the purchase of the tickets,” the message added.
The affected concerts include shows in major cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, New York, and Los Angeles. For many fans, this tour would have marked the first time seeing Joel live since his last full-scale run before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fans and the music community react
The announcement has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and fellow musicians alike. Social media platforms were flooded with messages wishing Joel a speedy recovery. Many fans shared memories of his past performances, thanking him for decades of timeless music.
“Well wishes to Billy Joel,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “Take your time and come back strong. Your health comes first.”
Several artists also took to Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to show support. Some described Joel as a major influence on their music careers, praising his contribution to the world of music.
A legendary career paused
Billy Joel, often called the “Piano Man,” has enjoyed a career spanning over five decades. He rose to fame in the 1970s with hits like Just the Way You Are, Uptown Girl, and We Didn’t Start the Fire. Over the years, he has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Even in his seventies, Joel continued to perform in front of sold-out crowds. His residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City was particularly popular, drawing fans from all over the world. Many viewed the now-cancelled tour as a farewell of sorts, a final chance to see the music legend perform live.
Looking ahead
At this time, there is no word on when Joel might return to the stage. His team has not announced any new dates or plans to reschedule the cancelled shows. For now, the focus is on his recovery.
Joel’s management thanked fans for their understanding and continued support during this difficult period. “We appreciate your love and patience as Billy focuses on his health,” the statement concluded.
As fans await updates, one thing is clear: Billy Joel’s legacy in music remains strong, and the world is rooting for his full recovery.
