Popular live music band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, widely known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50.
His death was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Monday, noting that the celebrated musician died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.

The family described the Shuga Band founder as “a revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”
The statement added that details of his funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date, while requesting privacy during what they described as a “deeply difficult time.”
Akiin Shuga, who founded the Shuga Band, was known for his electrifying stage presence, inspiring resilience, and advocacy for people living with disabilities, having built a remarkable music career despite being confined to a wheelchair after surviving polio as a child.
Through his band, he became a prominent figure in Nigeria’s live entertainment scene, performing at major social and corporate events for over two decades.
He is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom have described Akiin Shuga as a “true legend who redefined live music in Nigeria.”
