The newly elected president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Yakubu, is reportedly been arrested after he was said to have been involved in a fatal car accident in Surulere, Lagos.
The incident, which occurred shortly after his election victory, has thrown the Guild into a state of uncertainty as members await official details from the authorities.
Yakubu became the AGN president only days ago after winning a tightly contested election held during the Guild’s annual convention in Edo State.

He defeated veteran actress and filmmaker Rita Daniels with 116 votes, while she scored 113. Three ballots were declared invalid, making the race one of the closest in the Guild’s recent history.
His emergence marked a significant moment for the AGN. Since its official registration in 1998, the Guild has never been led by anyone from Northern Nigeria.
Yakubu’s victory broke that long-standing pattern and was widely celebrated across the industry. Supporters praised his years of service as AGN National Secretary and expressed hope that his leadership would usher in reforms and unity within the association.
However, those celebrations have now been overshadowed by news of the accident. According to early reports, Yakubu was driving through the Shitta area of Surulere when his vehicle allegedly struck a pedestrian.
Shortly after the incident, Yakubu was reportedly taken into police custody for questioning. For now, authorities have not issued an official statement.
Neither the Lagos State Police Command nor Yakubu’s representatives have responded publicly to the growing media inquiry.
This silence has fuelled speculation and raised questions about what actually happened on the road that night.
As the story spreads, reactions within Nollywood and the AGN community have been mixed. Some members have urged the public to remain calm and avoid concluding until verified information is released.
Yakubu, who only stepped into office days ago, had promised to focus on transparency, welfare, and rebuilding trust within the association. Now, his administration faces a major challenge even before it begins.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased pedestrian has yet to issue a statement. Residents in Surulere, however, have called on the police to conduct a full and transparent investigation, emphasising the need for accountability regardless of social status or public office.
For many Nigerians following the case, the lack of official communication has been a major source of concern.
Until authorities provide clear facts surrounding the accident, the circumstances of the crash and Yakubu’s legal situation remain open questions.
