Popular Nigerian actor and movie director, Afeez Owo, has finally opened up about the reasons behind his separation from actress Mide Martins, nearly a decade after the incident made headlines.
The couple’s split was first confirmed in April 2016 when Mide Martins took to social media to announce that Afeez had moved out of their matrimonial home “about three months ago after we had a minor argument over the well-being of his children.” The revelation sparked widespread speculation and online debate among fans and industry watchers.
Speaking recently on the ‘Behind The Fame’ podcast, Afeez said the separation was largely blown out of proportion due to social media attention. He explained that what started as a minor disagreement quickly escalated after Mide’s post went viral.
“The news of our separation went viral. And the fight became our first and the last fight as a couple. It was very serious, but we later reconciled,” he said.
Afeez admitted that he did not handle the situation well at the time. “I think I didn’t handle it well because I angrily left the house after we had a misunderstanding.
Although my intention was to spend two nights at a hotel and return home, after she accused me of leaving the house, I decided to stay away for more days,” he explained.

He added that the reconciliation came after Mide personally apologised. “She eventually came to apologise, and we reconciled. It was an issue we should have resolved between ourselves, but social media made the matter escalate even more,” he said.
The couple’s relationship has roots in Nollywood history. Mide Martins is the first daughter of the late actress Funmi Martins, who passed away in May 2002. Shortly after her mother’s death, Afeez Owo, who managed Funmi Martins’ affairs at the time, married Mide in 2003.
Their union has been one of Nollywood’s most talked-about relationships, not only because of the high-profile nature of the couple but also due to their contributions to the Nigerian film industry. Both Afeez and Mide are celebrated for their acting prowess, directing skills, and longevity in the business.
Reflecting on the incident, Afeez emphasised the role social media played in turning a minor disagreement into a public spectacle. He encouraged couples to handle their personal matters privately before they spiral out of control.
“This experience taught me the importance of patience and communication. Not every issue should be brought online. Some matters are best resolved within the home,” he said.
The revelation by Afeez comes at a time when conversations about privacy, online influence, and the impact of social media on relationships are gaining momentum in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Although the couple has had their share of challenges, Afeez’s candid admission highlights their commitment to reconciliation and family.

Their story serves as a reminder that even high-profile relationships can face struggles, but with understanding and communication, reconciliation is possible.
For fans of Nollywood, the disclosure offers closure to a chapter that had long been a topic of speculation. It also underscores the human side of celebrities, whose lives are often scrutinised far more intensely than their private counterparts.
