Popular Nollywood actress Kemisola Apesin, widely known as Sidi or Kemity, has opened up about her journey and the circumstances that led her to have two children with different men.
In a candid interview, she addressed the harsh criticism she has faced and explained the life experiences behind her choices.
“I was a teenager in secondary school”
Speaking during a recent appearance on Talk to B, a podcast hosted by actress Biola Bayo, Kemity revealed that her journey into motherhood began while she was still a student. She explained that she got pregnant as a teenager, just before her final secondary school exams.
“I was about to write my SSCE exams when I found out I was pregnant,” she recalled. “My mother insisted that I must finish school before I could even think of marriage. She was firm on that. She wanted me to have an education first.”
Kemity noted that although she became a young mother, marriage was not immediately an option for her. Her family placed a higher value on her completing her education, and that shaped her early life choices.
Tragedy struck: “I lost my first love”
The father of Kemity’s first child, who had travelled to Malaysia in search of greener pastures, returned to Nigeria unexpectedly. However, his return ended in tragedy.
“He didn’t tell anyone he was coming back. I just received a call that he had been found dead in a hotel in Nigeria,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion. “When we got to the hotel, all we saw with him was 300 dollars. We believe the money he came home with was stolen. That’s how I became a widow.”
Kemity said the news left her heartbroken. She not only lost someone she cared deeply about, but she also had to face the reality of raising her child alone.
“People judge without knowing my story”
The actress acknowledged that many people have criticised her for having children by two different men. She expressed disappointment over how easily society passes judgment without understanding the full story.
“I’ve been trolled so many times. People say all sorts of things about me because I have two kids with two different men,” she said. “But they don’t know what I’ve been through. It wasn’t my intention to have children this way. I didn’t plan it. I never wanted to walk away from my husband.”
Kemity explained that the public often assumes that her family situation is the result of carelessness or lack of morals. However, she believes people should show more compassion and take the time to understand what others go through.
Kemity second marriage and the painful breakup
After the tragic death of her first partner, Kemity tried to find love and stability again. She met the father of her second child while taking a computer training course. The relationship started well and eventually led to a court marriage.
But soon, cracks began to show in the union.
“We had a proper wedding at the court,” she said. “But things changed when I became pregnant. He started cheating, and we had constant misunderstandings.”
Kemity revealed that her husband later claimed that his spiritual advisor, an Alfa, told him that he would never succeed in life unless he left her.
“That was when I knew I had to walk away. It wasn’t easy, but I couldn’t stay in a place where I wasn’t respected,” she said.
“I chose peace over pain”
Reflecting on her journey, Kemity made it clear that while her life hasn’t followed a traditional path, she stands by her decisions. She chose her well-being and the well-being of her children over staying in toxic relationships.
“Life didn’t go as I planned, but I’m grateful for where I am today,” she said. “I’ve learned to be strong, not just for myself, but for my children.”
In sharing her story, Kemity hopes to inspire others going through difficult situations. She encourages young women to focus on their education and never let society’s judgment define their worth.
“Everyone has a story,” she said. “Before you judge, take a moment to listen.”
