Nigerian singer, Alexander Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has stirred controversy with his claim that the devil holds significant influence over the music industry.
The award-winning artiste made this bold statement during a recent appearance on The Nancy Isime Show.
In the interview, he described the music scene as a space heavily influenced by dark spiritual forces. According to him, artists often engage in questionable habits such as smoking because of this influence.
“The devil controls music. The devil is the choirmaster. That’s why we smoke and do all the things we do,” he said, adding that his claims were not merely assumptions but drawn from personal experiences and spiritual insight.

9ice cautions upcoming
9ice urged up-and-coming musicians to understand the spiritual terrain of the industry they hope to enter. He warned that those pursuing music should be aware of the unseen forces at play.
“Music generally is controlled by the devil,” he said. “If you’re coming into this industry, understand where you’re coming to. I’m not lying to you. He [the devil] is the most powerful angel. I’m speaking based on knowledge and what I’ve experienced spiritually.”
The “Gongo Aso” crooner did not give further details about his spiritual experiences but remained firm in his position. His words have sparked reactions across social media, with some expressing concern while others dismissed his claims as exaggerated.
This is not the first time celebrities have linked the entertainment industry to spiritual warfare. Several musicians and entertainers, both in Nigeria and abroad, have in the past spoken about the pressures, temptations, and moral battles that often come with fame and fortune.
Despite the backlash that his statement may draw, 9ice appeared unbothered. He insisted that the public deserves to know the truth, especially young talents who are eager to break into the industry.
“I have nothing to gain by lying,” he stated. “I’m just telling it as it is, based on what I’ve seen and gone through.”
The singer, who rose to fame in the late 2000s, is known for blending Yoruba proverbs and traditional themes into his music. Over the years, he has maintained a loyal fanbase and continues to speak openly about his beliefs, both personal and spiritual.
