The Federal Government has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Overseas Scholarship Scheme of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), offering Nigerian postgraduate students the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Malaysia.
The development was confirmed on Monday in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.
“FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) scholarships overseas,” the post stated.

According to details published on the PTDF scholarship portal, the scheme is open to MSc and PhD candidates in disciplines relevant to the oil and gas industry. Successful applicants will benefit from a comprehensive funding package that includes tuition fees, return air tickets, accommodation and living allowances, health insurance and bench fees, where applicable.
The agency said the scholarship is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s technical capacity in the energy sector by exposing beneficiaries to global best practices.
“The 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, cutting-edge research facilities and global expertise, while building indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector,” the PTDF stated.
For PhD candidates studying in the United Kingdom, the programme will adopt a split-site arrangement. Under this model, research will be conducted partly at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), and partly at selected UK partner universities, including Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Portsmouth.
The PTDF emphasised that the selection process is highly competitive. It noted that applicants would be assessed based on academic performance, quality and relevance of research proposals, membership of professional bodies and the alignment of proposed studies with national priorities in the oil and gas sector.
Eligibility requirements for MSc applicants include a minimum of a Second Class Lower (2.2) degree or better, completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, computer literacy, and at least five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics. PhD applicants are additionally required to submit a research proposal of no more than five pages, detailing objectives, methodology and data collection strategies.
The agency warned that all applicants must have their National Identity Number (NIN) verified before submitting applications. It added that multiple applications or the submission of falsified documents would result in automatic disqualification.
Interested candidates are required to apply online through the official PTDF scholarship portal at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng for approved programmes at PTDF partner institutions. The deadline for submission of applications is February 27.
The PTDF advised prospective applicants to carefully review the guidelines on the portal to ensure compliance with all requirements before applying.
