Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced a new partnership with Coventry University to establish a campus in Lagos.
Alausa, while accompanying President Bola Tinubu on an official visit to London, confirmed that the project aims to allow Nigerian students to earn British degrees without travelling abroad.
The “proposed” campus is Alaro City, Lagos. According to Alausa, the school plans to begin admitting students between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, once approvals are given.
The university will offer both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in fields such as science, technology, business, and vocational skills.
Alausa revealed this move through his official X handle. He explained that this development is intended to reduce the financial burden on parents.
He noted that for a long time, families have had to send their children thousands of miles away to get a quality education.
He stated that the new arrangement will provide fully accredited UK degrees at a much lower cost while keeping students close to their families.
Alausa said, “We want Nigerian parents to enjoy having their children at home, while still receiving a world-class UK education.”
Alausa also emphasised that the project is designed to build Nigeria’s “human capital”.
The government, through provision of local access to international training, hopes to develop a workforce capable of driving innovation and national growth.
Alausa described the initiative as a way of bringing global opportunities directly to Nigeria.
The partnership is believed to represent a major step in the government’s effort to reform the education sector and make high-level certificates more accessible to the public.
