The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate has announced the indefinite suspension of all academic activities, including the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, in response to an industrial action by the institution’s staff unions.
Students residing in university hostels have also been instructed to vacate their accommodations by Monday morning.
The decision was made during a virtual meeting of the university’s Senate on Saturday to address the strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions on Thursday, July 31.

The JAC comprises the LASU chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
According to a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, the Senate’s decision follows a report from the Vice-Chancellor.
The report indicated that the unions’ main demands are directed at the Lagos State Government, not the university management.
The statement further revealed that the university management had been engaged in discussions to facilitate a resolution.
A meeting was held on Friday between university officials, union representatives, relevant state ministries, and the Head of Service, Olabode Agoro.
Although the meeting concluded with an agreement to hold further consultations, the unions proceeded with their strike.
A follow-up meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 7.
As a result of the ongoing industrial action, the Senate resolved to halt the second-semester examinations, which were originally set to begin on Monday, August 4.

In a separate directive, the university has ordered all students to vacate their hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses by 6:00 a.m. on Monday.
The university urged all members of its community to remain calm and law-abiding during this period.
