The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step in promoting indigenous fashion and textiles internationally, with a renewed focus on Adire—a traditional Yoruba fabric rich in cultural heritage.
As part of this effort, the state Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, recently held a high-level meeting with Her Majesty Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, founder of Africa Fashion Week London and Nigeria, alongside the British Deputy High Commissioner, Jonny Baxter.

The strategic engagement, held in Lagos, aimed to explore new avenues for elevating Adire and other African fashion expressions to global prominence, while also harnessing their cultural and economic potential.
Speaking during the meeting, Benson-Awoyinka reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting creative platforms that empower designers, celebrate cultural identity, and contribute meaningfully to Lagos’s economy.
“As the fashion and creative capital of Nigeria, Lagos remains a catalyst for innovation, style, and enterprise. We are proud to support initiatives that promote our cultural assets and inspire the next generation of creatives,” she said.
She described the meeting as a pivotal step in strengthening Lagos’s position as a hub for African fashion while preserving traditional textile craftsmanship and promoting the creative industry’s growth.
Key discussions during the meeting also centred around the upcoming 15th edition of Africa Fashion Week London—a major milestone in the global African fashion calendar.
The event continues to serve as a platform for showcasing African creativity, sustainability, and cultural storytelling.
The Commissioner highlighted that partnerships such as this are essential for amplifying African narratives and positioning Lagos as a leading voice in global fashion and cultural diplomacy.
