The Lagos State Government has concluded a rigorous three-day intensive workshop aimed at transforming its public sector auditors into frontline guardians of transparency and good governance.
The capacity-building summit, themed “Achieving Effective and Efficient Audit for Auditors,” wrapped up on Friday, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Alausa.
The three-day session targeted supervisors, team leads, and members of audit teams across the state’s various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Declaring the workshop open, the State Auditor-General, Muyiwa Adetola, challenged participants to evolve beyond traditional tick-and-bash routine compliance.
He emphasised that modern auditing must be risk-based and value-driven to meet the complex demands of a mega-city economy.
“Effective auditing is essential for preventing financial leakages, improving performance, and building public trust,” Adetola stated.
“Training like this pushes auditors to move beyond routine checks and adopt performance-oriented approaches that support service delivery.”
The workshop featured high-level technical sessions led by industry veterans who linked audit efficiency to the state’s broader developmental goals.
Key sessions include procurement as a financial anchor by Onafowote Fatai, Director-General of the Public Procurement Agency, who highlighted how understanding procurement is fundamental to spotting financial irregularities before they occur.
The modern auditor’s workflow, anchored by expert facilitator Tom Isibor who led a deep dive into enhancing audit performance through professional discipline and digital reporting tools.
The initiative is a central pillar of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to fiscal discipline.

By the end of the workshop, participants were equipped with techniques for leveraging big data to identify high-risk financial areas, strategies for smoother collaboration between auditors and MDAs and methods for strengthening internal controls to safeguard public resources.
Adetola reaffirmed that these capacity-building exercises are not one-off events but part of a resilient, credible audit system designed to ensure every naira of public funds translates into tangible benefits for Lagos residents.
