The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) have agreed to step up collaboration as part of efforts to shape policies that will accelerate national economic growth.
This was the highlight of discussions when the NES leadership, led by its National President, Prof Adeola Adenikinju, paid a courtesy call on the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, at the Service’s headquarters in Abuja recently.
The visit comes ahead of the Society’s Annual Conference slated for 8–11 September in Abuja, where experts and policymakers are expected to deliberate on strategies for Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Speaking during the meeting, Adeniyi stressed that effective policy formulation must be rooted in both empirical research and real-time data from critical government institutions.

He explained that while the NES generates knowledge and policy options through academic research, the Customs Service applies fiscal policies on the ground, ensuring compliance and safeguarding revenue.
“While the NES provides evidence-based economic research and policy recommendations, the NCS plays a pivotal role in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and the enforcement of fiscal policies that directly shape the economy,” he said.
In his remarks, Professor Adenikinju said the NES is keen on strengthening institutional partnerships that will inform better policy outcomes. He formally invited the CGC to the September conference, adding that his participation would enrich discussions on trade, revenue, and economic competitiveness.
He further announced Adeniyi’s nomination for the 2025 Distinguished Public Service Award, describing him as a reform-driven leader whose innovations have modernised Customs, expanded revenue mobilisation, and facilitated cross-border trade.
According to him, the award is reserved for public servants whose contributions directly support Nigeria’s development goals.
“The NES President also announced the Comptroller-General’s nomination for the 2025 Distinguished Public Service Award (DPSNES). The nomination recognises his leadership in modernising Customs operations, boosting revenue collection, and implementing innovative trade facilitation measures that have strengthened Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.,” the statement noted.
