Five persons have reportedly lost their lives in Rivers State after an explosion occurred at an illegally refined petroleum product storage located in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of the state. The incident occurred in Omoku on Saturday at approximately 11 am, after a fire erupted from the illegally dumped storage house, killing four females and one male, who were burnt beyond recognition. Following the outbreak of the sixth Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the country, the people of Uganda have finally announced their freedom since the disease resurfaced on 30 January 2025 in Kampala. Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, said a rescue mission with sister agencies has commenced for 12 passengers abducted along Calabar waterways. The passengers were said to have been abducted by sea pirates on their way from Calabar to Oron in Akwa Ibom State, according to a report on Saturday. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new guidelines calling for urgent action to stop the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), especially its growing “medicalization” — where health workers themselves are carrying out the harmful procedure. FGM involves cutting or injuring parts of a girl’s private parts for non-medical reasons.
