UK’s longest living former Labour MP and defense minister, Sir Patrick Duffy has been reported dead following a brief illness at the age of 105. According to a confirmation by a family friend, Kevin Meagher, the former MP died on January 2. In his political career, Duffy ran for parliament in 1950 and got elected MP in 1963 following his win at the Colne Valley by-election, before serving as the representative for Sheffield Attercliffe from 1970 until he retired in 1992. The Met office has asserted that 25 was the UK’s warmest and sunniest year on record. The three hottest years ever recorded in the UK have all occurred within the current decade, according to meteorological data, with all of the 10 warmest years recorded in the past 20 years. The police have confirmed the death of a 51-year-old man who died following his attempt to save a woman who was reported to be struggling in the water at Brighton. Sussex Police said they were informed at about 10.35am on Thursday after a swimmer from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was saved from the water west of Brighton Palace Pier. NHS figures have revealed a decrease in the number of people with flu at the hospital as England’s top doctor said the health service was not complacent as cold conditions set in. A power failure has forced the suspension of all passenger and vehicle train services through the Channel Tunnel, disrupting thousands of journeys ahead of New Year celebrations. Passenger operator Eurostar confirmed that almost all scheduled services between London and continental Europe were cancelled for the day.
