A weather warning has been issued by the Met office about heavy snow showers across parts of the UK. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for parts of Scotland, effective from 6am on New Year’s Day until midnight on 2 January. A woman and two children aged seven and four have been reported dead following a fire outbreak in the early hours of Boxing Day. The father, who is a police officer in his desperation to save them, forced his way out of the stone cottage and attempted to break inside of his children’s bedroom from the outside to rescue them. The Ministry of Defence plans to offer young people in Britain a gap year–style programme with the aim to introduce them to military life, as part of a new “whole of society” approach to defence. The government has now confirmed that under-25s who are up to 150 in number will be recruited for the pilot programme, which is due to start in March 2026. An investigation has been launched at a hospital in Glasgow following an error that resulted in the cremation of the wrong body. Hospital officials said the body was mistakenly released to an undertaker, with the error only discovered after the funeral service had taken place and the cremation completed. As a result of the error, another family was unable to have the remains of their relative present at their funeral. A British 13-year-old boy has been reported dead after he was stabbed at his residence in Portugal. According to authorities, the alleged assailant who also has been reported dead, was the former partner of the boy’s mother. The incident occurred in the village of Casais, 90 miles north-east of Lisbon, in the municipality of Tomar. A man has been indicted for drugging and raping his ex-wife during a period of 13-years , alongside five other men charged with sexual offences against her. Formerly from Swindon but now living in Enfield in north London, Philip Young, 49, has been charged with 56 sexual offences. A male teenager aged 15-year-old has been charged to court with the murder of a nine-year-old girl in Weston-super-Mare, England. According to Somerset police, the victim, Aria Thorpe died from a single stab wound at an address in North Somerset town. The boy was arrested in nearby Worle a short time after the girl was found in Lime Close. At a brief hearing, the boy only spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Conciliation service Acas has offered to help resolve the deadlock in the ongoing resident doctors’ strike in England. The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service said it is willing to become involved in efforts to find a settlement to the long-running dispute, as resident doctors take industrial action for the 14th time in protest over pay and employment conditions.
