Donald Trump has piled pressure on Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the eve of high-level talks in Washington, declaring the Ukrainian president could end the war with Russia “almost immediately” if he chose to. Writing on his Truth Social platform on Sunday night, the US president ruled out any prospect of Ukraine joining Nato or reclaiming Crimea as part of future negotiations with Moscow. Crimea, he said, had been lost under Barack Obama “12 years ago, without a shot being fired”. The remarks, made hours before Trump is due to host leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the EU and Nato…

The UK’s first transgender judge has launched a human rights case in Strasbourg after being excluded from a supreme court ruling that redefined the legal meaning of sex. Victoria McCloud, a retired judge now working as a litigation strategist at W-Legal, is seeking a rehearing of the case, which culminated in the supreme court ruling in April that the term “woman” in the Equality Act 2010 does not include transgender women, even if they hold a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). She argues the court breached her right to a fair trial by refusing to hear evidence from her or any…
Tens of thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Tel Aviv on Sunday evening in one of the largest rallies in Israel since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, demanding both an end to the conflict and the release of hostages. The protest, which organisers said drew around 500,000 people, followed a day of nationwide strikes and demonstrations intended to pressure the government into halting its military campaign. Hostage Square, a plaza that has become the focal point for public anger, was packed with protesters chanting, “Bring them all home! Stop the war!” The Hostage and Missing Families…
The former head of Israel’s military intelligence has been recorded saying that 50 Palestinians should be killed for every Israeli who died during Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attacks, adding that it “does not matter now if they are children”. In recordings broadcast by Israel’s Channel 12, Aharon Haliva described the death toll in Gaza, which he put at more than 50,000, as “necessary” and a “message to future generations” of Palestinians. “They need a Nakba every now and then to feel the price,” Haliva said, referring to the mass displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians in 1948 following the creation…

Russia has agreed in principle to allow the United States and European allies to extend a security guarantee to Ukraine modelled on NATO’s collective defence clause, according to Washington’s special envoy Steve Witkoff. Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Witkoff said the breakthrough came during last week’s Alaska summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. “We got to an agreement that the United States and other European nations could effectively offer Article Five-like language to cover a security guarantee,” Witkoff told host Jake Tapper. “Putin has said that a red flag is NATO admission. And so what…
BoliviansBolivians are voting in an election that could bring an end to almost two decades of dominance by the leftist Movimiento al Socialismo (Mas). The party, founded by Evo Morales, risks losing its legal status if it fails to reach 3% of the vote, according to electoral law. Morales, facing an arrest warrant and barred from standing, has urged his supporters to cast null votes in protest. President Luis Arce, deeply unpopular amid the country’s worst economic crisis in 40 years, chose not to run. His chosen successor, interior minister Eduardo del Castillo, has been polling at about 2%. The…
The Canadian government has forced flight attendants at Air Canada back to work less than 12 hours after they began strike action, ordering binding arbitration in a dispute that has disrupted the travel plans of more than 100,000 passengers at the height of the summer holiday season. Canada’s largest airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents cabin crew, have been in talks since March over pay and conditions. The union has described current pay as “poverty wages” and condemned the practice of unpaid labour, noting that attendants receive no compensation before take-off or after landing. On…
European leaders will gather with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the White House on Monday for talks with Donald Trump, in an effort to challenge a proposed US-backed peace plan that would see Russia claim further Ukrainian territory. Britain’s prime minister, Keir Starmer, France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, and Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will accompany Zelenskyy for discussions in the Oval Office. Germany’s government said the talks would address “security guarantees, territorial issues, and continued support for Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression”,…
