Bucknor-Akerele

Former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s reported focus on securing a second term in 2027, calling it a misplaced priority given Nigeria’s deepening social and economic crisis. Speaking on The Morning Brief programme on Channels Television, Bucknor-Akerele — who served under Tinubu from 1999 to 2002 — said the administration should instead be focused on rescuing the country from its current decline. “Unfortunately, what I see is that the president seems more concerned about a second term than fixing the country,” she said. “I think he should pay attention to the work being done…

Inflation

Nigeria’s headline inflation slowed to 22.22% in June 2025 from 22.97% in May, marking a 0.75 percentage point drop, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The decline also represents a notable 11.97-point decrease from June 2024, when the rate stood at 34.19%. The NBS explained in its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Wednesday that the easing in the year-on-year figure reflects changes in the rebased index, now using 2024 as the new base year. However, the surge on a month-to-month basis increased slightly, rising to 1.68% in June from 1.53% in May, highlighting ongoing price…

EFCC headquarters

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced plans to challenge a court decision that acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of alleged money laundering and fraud charges. Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke ruled in favour of a no-case submission filed by Fayose, declaring that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence to warrant the defendant entering a defence. “The prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the first defendant,” the judge held. Reacting to the verdict, EFCC lead counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), confirmed the agency’s intention to appeal. He stated that the commission…

Inflation

UK inflation rose unexpectedly in June, reaching its highest level in a year and a half, according to data released on Wednesday. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) climbed to 3.6% in June, up from 3.4% in May. Senate President Akpabio speaks on enforcing discipline and order in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed an appeal challenging a recent judgment by the Federal High Court that ordered the Senate to reverse the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. The appeal, dated July 14, 2025, was submitted to the Court of Appeal in Abuja. Akpabio is contesting the July 4 ruling by Justice Binta Nyako, who declared the Senate’s six-month suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan as excessive and a violation of the rights of her constituents to adequate representation. Although the judge affirmed the Senate’s constitutional powers to discipline its members, she held that the nature and duration…

Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has criticised Rauf Aregbesola, accusing the former governor and now Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of leaving a trail of debts and unfinished projects during his tenure.
