A prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and South-West Chairman of The Alternative Movement, Olusola Salau, has announced his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.
Salau, in a statement personally and shared it with journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Monday, was joined by hundreds of his supporters in the move.
Citing the PDP’s poor performance in the recently concluded Remo Federal Constituency by-election and low voter turnout, Salau declared, “There is nothing more for Ogun State PDP.
I have finally made up my mind to dump the party.” He emphasized that, as an experienced politician, he recognizes the PDP’s diminished influence in Ogun State and the entire South-West.
“I have told the leadership of the party, enough is enough,” he added, vowing to join forces with the APC to strengthen it and contribute to the state’s development.
Salau clarified that while he is leaving the PDP where he once served as a key mobilizer for LADO’s House of Representatives and gubernatorial campaigns he will retain his position as South-West Chairman of The Alternative Movement.
This national opposition coalition aims to revitalize Nigeria’s democracy through ideological clarity, integrity, and transparency. “I am no longer LADO, I am no longer a PDP member,” the statement read.
“We are moving in large numbers to join His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and other progressives to make APC stronger than it used to be.”
More exits from Ogun PDP
This defection follows a wave of exits from the PDP in Ogun State.
Last Thursday, Kehinde Olaniyi Akinde, the party’s 2021 chairmanship candidate for Yewa North Local Government, also defected, expressing disappointment over national, state, and local-level injustices and internal wranglings.
Earlier, former state chairman Dr. Sikirulahi Ogundele and 2023 deputy governorship candidate Abdulkabir Akinlade led hundreds of supporters to the APC in Abeokuta.
They accused 2023 gubernatorial candidate Oladipupo Adebutu of high-handedness and treating the party like a personal business empire.
