The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State has scheduled its primaries for the upcoming local government chairmanship and councilorship elections for 25 January 2026.
The announcement was made by the state party chairman, Chief Stanley Emegha, while addressing journalists in Abakaliki following a State Executive Council meeting on Monday.
Emegha urged political appointees aspiring to contest the polls to resign from their positions, in compliance with a directive issued last month by Governor Francis Nwifuru.

“The primary election for both councillorship and chairmanship will hold on 25 January, but the processes will commence earlier in January,” he stated.
He emphasised that appointees must resign at least 30 days before the primaries, warning that failure to do so by 20 December 2025 would disqualify them from contesting.
The chairman also disclosed that membership revalidation exercises would soon begin once the party receives the necessary registration codes from the national headquarters.
He assured members that transparency would underpin all activities leading to the primaries.
In a separate development, Emegha announced the start of construction on a new, expansive APC secretariat in the state, projected for completion within six months.
“The complex and the spaces are far larger than that of the national secretariat.
This goes to show that we want to continue to maintain our number one position as a party in Ebonyi State,” he remarked.
Emegha boasted of the APC’s iron grip on political power in Ebonyi, claiming control over all elective positions: 171 out of 171 ward councillors, all 13 local government chairmen, all 24 state House of Assembly seats, six federal House of Representatives members, and all three senators.

He further revealed that the last remaining opposition federal lawmaker, Iduma Igariwey (representing Afikpo North/South constituency), has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
“If I bring the register here, I will show you that this is Itim 001 ward the ward of Chief Iduma Igariwey. His name is fully written in the register,” Emegha asserted.
