A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Babarinde, has urged the party to shun complacency in choosing a successor to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 governorship election.
Babarinde, a former APC Chairman in South Africa and current General Secretary of Renewed Hope Global, emphasised the need for a transparent, inclusive, and competitive process to ensure the party retains its stronghold in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos, Babarinde warned that the APC must not take voters for granted, citing the party’s unexpected defeat by the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election in the state.

“The shocking defeat of APC in Lagos was a reminder that no party is invincible,” he said, urging the party to remain vigilant and connected to the electorate.
He stressed that political complacency could lead to further electoral setbacks if not addressed.
Babarinde advocated for a reformed candidate selection process, proposing competitive primaries that include debates, manifesto nights, and open engagement with voters.
He also called for broader accessibility to nomination forms, noting that financial barriers often prevent capable leaders from participating.
“By creating a fairer and more transparent process, APC can ensure that the best candidates emerge to lead,” he stated.
Reflecting on Lagos’ political history, Babarinde credited the state’s developmental strides to the visionary leadership of late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first executive governor, and President Bola Tinubu, who served as governor from 1999.
He noted that Tinubu’s administration laid a sustainable development template that has driven consistent progress in infrastructure, education, health, and sports, despite brief political frictions during the Ambode era.
As Sanwo-Olu’s second term nears its end on May 29, 2027, Babarinde underscored the importance of selecting a formidable candidate capable of sustaining Lagos’ growth trajectory.
He cautioned against opposition forces, describing them as “expired politicians” seeking to derail national progress with misleading narratives.

“APC must remain consistent and connected to the people. Lagos deserves candidates who can win decisively and support President Tinubu’s efforts,” he said.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Babarinde’s remarks serve as a clarion call for the APC to prioritize voter engagement and transparency to secure Lagos’ political future.
