A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, has urged the National Assembly to commence immediate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu amid allegations of tampering with the recently enacted Tax Reform Bills.
The controversy stems from claims that the gazetted versions of the four tax laws signed by President Tinubu on 26 June 2025 contain provisions not debated or approved by lawmakers.

The reforms, aimed at broadening Nigeria’s tax base, streamlining administration, boosting revenue, and reducing borrowing, are set to take effect from 1 January 2026.
The allegations were first raised by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker Abdulsammad Dasuki, representing Sokoto State in the House of Representatives.
Furing a plenary session, Dasuki invoked a point of order, asserting that his legislative privileges had been breached.
He claimed to have spent three days comparing gazetted copies with the harmonised bills passed by both chambers and the House’s Votes and Proceedings, uncovering unauthorised insertions.
Eze, a former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP), described the purported alterations as a “criminal usurpation” of legislative authority.
Likening them to the biblical parable of tares sown among wheat (Matthew 13:25), he accused the President of secretly modifying the bills after parliamentary approval to align with personal views.
“Such actions amount to gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of the constitution,” Eze stated, emphasising that the President lacks line-item amendment powers.
He argued that the alleged interference undermines the separation of powers and sets a dangerous authoritarian precedent.
Eze further criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio for allegedly restricting lawmakers’ access to certified true copies of the bills, deepening suspicions and legislative tensions.
He decried the National Assembly leadership’s perceived inaction as enabling executive overreach.

The National Assembly has responded by directing its Clerk to re-gazette the laws and issue certified copies of the versions passed by both chambers, while an investigation continues.
Opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, have called the discrepancies a constitutional crisis, with some demanding suspension of implementation.
