The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, dismissing their credentials as genuine democrats ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday titled “Democracy Without Sacrifice: The Myth of Obi and Atiku”, the party accused the duo of lacking any meaningful historical commitment to Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle against military dictatorship.

The APC argued that true democracy is built on sacrifice, unwavering consistency, respect for institutions, and fidelity to the expressed will of the people qualities it claimed are conspicuously absent from the records of Atiku and Obi.
According to the party, a careful examination of Nigeria’s democratic history reveals that neither man played any significant role during the dark days of military rule, when pro-democracy activists endured detention, exile, torture, and even death in defence of democratic ideals.
“They made no sacrifices, bore no scars and took no risks in defence of democracy. Yet today, they seek to appropriate the moral capital earned by braver patriots,” the Lagos APC declared in the statement issued on Wednesday.
The party further accused the pair of engaging in selective outrage and convenience-driven politics rather than demonstrating genuine, long-standing dedication to democratic principles.
It contrasted their alleged absence from the frontline struggles of the 1980s and 1990s with the enduring contributions of recognised pro-democracy figures who risked everything to end military rule and restore civilian governance.

The fresh criticism comes amid ongoing political manoeuvring and positioning by major opposition figures as the 2027 presidential contest draws nearer.
The APC’s Lagos chapter, widely regarded as one of the party’s most vocal and influential state structures, used the opportunity to reinforce the ruling party’s narrative that its leadership including President Bola Tinubu has a deeper, more credible track record in the fight for democracy.
