The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant and Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has denied claims that the party has chosen a consensus candidate for the 2027 election in Oyo State.
The reaction followed recent reports that the APC leaders had already picked preferred candidates for Oyo, Lagos, and Ogun states to prepare early for the next general elections.
Adelabu clarified that the party has not made any such decision.
Bolaji Tunji, his media aide, explained that speculation is common in politics, especially as the election period draws closer.
He confirmed that Adelabu, who intends to run for the governorship, is still in the race.
Tunji noted, “My principal has not withdrawn from the race. People will always try to push narratives to gain relevance or create confusion.”
He further explained that the APC follows a strict internal process and hierarchy, noting that any official decision regarding candidates would follow the party’s established rules.
It is believed that, despite these denials, former Secretary to the State Government, Senator Sharafadeen, Alli has become a prominent figure in recent discussions.
His experience and his current role in the Senate have reportedly made him a strong contender.
Reports also tend to relate these developments to a meeting in Lagos that involved President Bola Tinubu and other top South-West APC leaders.
The Oyo APC, as reported by the Guardian, is expected to meet in Abuja soon to discuss the official steps for choosing a candidate.
It should be noted, however, that the governorship election is scheduled for February 6, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
